Random Reference Questions

I hope you have most of your holiday shopping taken care of! I think I just need to pick up a gift card for someone and then I’m all set!

Anyways, just got a phone call while on the reference desk and the patron asked me for a cauliflower au gratin recipe. I didn’t have to go into details about the instructions, she just needed a list of the ingredients. I love getting random phone calls like this. It’s nice to know that people think they can call the library for just about anything, I mean, they can of course, but sometimes I’m just amazed that they think to call us first.

So here’s the recipe I gave her for anyone who is craving cauliflower au gratin now: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/cauliflower-gratin-recipe.html

What random/fun questions have you had at the Reference Desk? I’d love to hear them.

Just a fun little tidbit for the day. Hope you are all doing well!

First post!

Hi there!

Let’s see…I’m currently reading “The Wasp Factory” by Iain Banks. It’s an interesting one about a young psychopath who has committed three murders. Well he’s committed many more if you count all the bugs and animals he’s killed. And I say interesting in that I’m not sure how it’s going to end and it’s definitely one of the weirder ones I’ve read. It’s a short book but it has taken me a little while to get through. Could be because I just can’t get into the main character, but I’m far enough that I have to finish it.

And there are so many podcasts that I’m listening to! There are so many good ones out there. King Falls AM is one of my favorites – it’s a fantastic comedy. I just finished season one of Someone Knows Something which looks into cold cases. Others I’ve been listening to are Mabel  and The Bright Sessions. All three of which are awesome!

I will go into the book and podcasts in a later post, but just wanted to get one on the board. I’ll be sharing the good and the bad about adult programming, all the books I’m reading and the many podcasts I’m listening to.

I’m a reference librarian first but I take care of most of the adult programming at my branch. It’s fun for the most part but it certainly has it’s days. Just the other day, someone called, not sure where they were located, but she first asks me what the weather is like where I’m at. So I tell her. Then she asks me for a phone number for a Target in New Jersey. What? I’m in Southern California. I didn’t tell her that, but just found it curious that she called my branch. Then after finding her the right number, she needed a library’s number, also in New Jersey. Found that one for her and that was it! It was hard to hear her sometimes but we made it through. I love it when I get a random phone call like that.

Anyways, it’s late and I’ve got some more reading to do.

Happy Reading!
